The Beginnings
In 1832, community members established the Talladega Baptist Church near Mardisville. This
was the first Baptist church in the Creek territory of Alabama, and it played an instrumental role
in establishing the Coosa River Baptist Association in 1833, In fact, it is the oldest church in the
Association. In 1871, the Church constructed a new building in Alpine. The colonial wood frame
Building, with its high ceilings, green shutters, and antique clear glass windows, causes one to
Step back into history. Church members met in the new building in January 1872. The
congregation’s first order of business was to formally change the name from Talladega Baptist
Church to Alpine Baptist Church as it stands today. Alpine Baptist Church is listed in the
Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage, effective March 29, 2018.
Members of the Alpine Baptist Church have continued to worship Jesus Christ and foster
Fellowship among those whom He has called into His family since 1832. From the Alpine Baptist
Church, many other churches have come into existence. Virginia planters, coming to the
Alabama territory, founded the Church, and their families and servants worshipped in the
community until the end of the Civil War when Black members established their own church. In
the 1800s, Alpine Baptist Church gave more to missions than any Baptist church in Alabama.
The resident membership remains small but is as committed as it has ever been. The
Congregation emphasizes teaching the Bible as it applies to everyday life. Emphasis is placed on
Missions, especially t helping the needy in the community.
Alpine’s ministry has a positive focus. Emphasis is upon God’s gracious love and care. Not only
Is the grace of God the center of congregational thinking, the development of graciousness in
Individual human life is focal.
